I've written a dynamic assembly loading mechanism using Memorystreams, that enables me to "hot" unload an assembly, and load a new version without needing to shutdown my executable.
I use Debug versions of my assemblies so that I can get StackTraces out of Exceptions if they occur, which works fine when I use a filebased load of the assembly.
Is there some way that I can tell .NET that my PDB files are in a Disk location, and the Assembly has been loaded from a memory stream?
BTW: This is using .NET Framework 1.1

OK I figured it out - just use the other version of Load(byte[], byte[]) where the second byte array is the symbol stream!

I was trying to add some users controls from a vendor's DLL to my Visual Studio .NET 2003 Toolbox. In doing do, somehow I "blew away" all the standard controls like Button, Label, TextBox, etc. Help! How do I get these back?

Right click on the toolbox and choose add/remove items and then in the list you will see list of check boxes contains all the controls you cann add.

I am writing a compact framework application that stores data in an XML file. Consiquently I have to read and write and edit the data that is stored in this file. Reading and searching the data is easy enough however I am looking for the most efficient way to edit the data once stored.
The solution that I have seen suggested most often is to use XmlDocument to open the file and edit it. However I have seen it written that the fact that XmlDocument requires the entire document to be read into memory is in efficient and a bad idea with memory restricted devices such as a PDA.
This leads me to have the following questions:
Is the performance issues of XmlDocument a large concern if I am going to be opening the file, finding what I am looking for editing and closing all at once?
Secondly, if the answer to that question is true, what is the best way to edit a file? My next thought would be to use a conjunction of XmlTextReader and XmlTextWriter to search the file and push into a buffer as I go, but that seems tedious.

It depends on how much you will edit the file, how big the file typically is etc... If you can do it at one pass and memory is problem, you could really use chained XmlReader/XmlWriter. Btw, good idea

When i try to set a value to a parameter for my class , vb underline with a blue line the statement and in the tip toolbox says "Expression is a value and therefore cannot be targen of an assign"
What im missing .. or my object that represent my collection nees any thing else than inhertits from Arraylist type ..

Hi there,
Is there any way to first INSTANTIATE a class and then register it for remoting (as a server activated singleton object) ?
It is very important in cases which, for example:
a. I have a CacheManager class
b. A second class, Reporter, accepts a reference to the CacheManager
via the constructor (optional).
-> How can i first create an instance of the class, set it up and then
publish it for remoting (as a singleton)

Did you look into the RemotingServices.Marshal? You can use it like
RemoteObject obj = new RemoteObject();
RemotingServices.Marshal(obj, "RemoteObject.soap");

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the code, but then 3 lines isn't near enough to diagnose it. If the problem is on the doc.Load(filename); line, then it's probably going to be caused by an invalid XML file.

I am creating an application that will create a notify window similar to outlook 2003 notify popup. I am making an asyncronous remoting call using system.thread that raises an event to show the form. However, the form shows up as a black box and then immediately disappears when the event is called. If I call the function through a menu item or button, it works fine.

I guess the problem is because you're calling methods/setting properties on the control from another thread. You should use BeginInvoke or Invoke methods on the UI (the Form object in your case) to marshal the call to the UI thread.

Hello,
There are a few companies out there saying that even though you have an outbound only firewall they are able to create a two way, bidirectional communication with client and server.
how is this possible without the client being a simple 'Get' client with two channels open, one for get and another for set but both pulling data from server. The server doesnt push to client.
Anyone know?

It usually works like this:
Firewalls block connections that are being made from the "outside" world. In order to allow easy configuration, you can specify a set of ports on which clients may connect to an outside server. As this usually means "TCP/IP" connection, a second "channel" is necessary, which ends on some random port (>1024) at the client.
(eg. client(192.168.0.1) connects to server(192.168.0.250) on port 80-> client sends to 192.168.0.250:80 and received on 192.168.0.1:1234)
The firewall "knows" that the outgoing connection is OK, so the incoming connection has to be accepted as well, since its necessary for the TCP Connection.
There are quite a few other tipps and tricks (one involving automatic changes to your firewall software), but this is whats commonly done.

Good day all,
I am trying to gather some information about the Caching Application Block and finding it a bit hard to find documentation on it. I have read some nice write ups of its use on different sites, but I am really looking for people's opinions on whether this App Block is worth the time to implement or if you are better off with a custom solution? Especially after diving into the UIP app block recently and hearing discussions of its bloat and problems.
Our project consists of a web client and a smart client and there has been discussion amongst our team of putting parts in multiple app domains. If I am understanding it right, we would need a seperate instance of the block for each app domain? Has this proved to be transparent or a problem for people on larger scale applications? We are also going to be moving at a pretty rapid pace during development so we need to keep speedbumps down to a minimum.
I would appreciate hearing people's thoughts and experience with this application block!

I have made a small windows service and I want a system tray icon I can use to interact with the service. I Suspect I'll need to create a separate application that controls the icon and monitors the service. My question is, how do I only have the application running when the service is running? Obviously the application would only run when a user is logged in, but can someone point me in the right direction, or possibly to an article that can help me solve this problem?
