i have an app which uses skins
and i want to use a hidden button for a tooltip
but it doesn't show!
the tooltip only shows when the button is visible, but this isn't what i want/need
andybody knows a workaround?

tooltip works with the button's messages of WM_MOUSEMOVE etc.
if the button is invisible, those messages will not be sent to the button, so standard tooltip doesn't work anyway.
you can create ur tooltip for dialog, if mouse moves to the button's position, then show ur tooltip. this is possible only way to do.

There are probably dozens of ways to accomplish this (I do not know them). But what you can possibly do is create an owner drawn button and then make it completly transparent, that way it is still invisable to the eye and yet windows will still consider it visable.
How do you make it transparent? Again there is more than one way! But if you make it an owner drawn button, then you simply do not draw it and say you have. (Simple!)

Probably easier is to use a picture control and define it as a rectangle with etched color.

Question: Are tooltips tied into picture contols (via MFC) or do you have to monitor mouse movement and figure out when to manualy call some tooltips function to show the tip.
If the latter then it probably is not easier. But, like I said, there is no dought that there are multiple way to accomplish the goal.

Hi,
I creating cab project in vs.net 2003. There is a provision to add necessary files to create the .cab file. I want to know how to add a whole folder to create .cab. Also I want to know how to programatically unzip the .cab files.
ie if I create a setup to install the .cab file it should unzip automatically and install the files. If anyone have some ideas please help...

after reading your other questions, I question the wisdom of the person that put you in your TA position.
look around CodeProject, there are TONS of cool things and samples that people have shared.
but it all depends on the level of the class you are facing; do they know any programming language ? What are their experience ?

actually this is a basic class that I TA for. My teacher has asked me to look for all of the things I have looked for. Everyone in this class is just learning their first language and I have mastered all that is taught in this class, but I live in OREGON!!! We have no funding so I'm probably one of the most able programmers in the school but we don't have enough classes about programming so need all the help I can get so I say again any help will be appreciated, especially cool SIMPLE codes.

Hey it's nice to here someone from back home is trying to share the wealth! This may not be the best place to look for programs for a beggining class, although there are a lot of articles here for begginers. It depends on what level of programs you are looking for: are they just to show what can be done or are they ment to show how to do it? There are articles here that can do both (more or less), but most are for peaple who already now how to program. One place to look for programs, is in archives, like the C/C++ User Journal (formaly C User Journal), they have programs going back for years (since before Windows or even DOS as we know it). Another source is university sights, some universities may even still have a BBS in place. When I started programming, I spent a great deal of time visiting the North Carolina State University (NCSU) BBS.
One more sugestion: Grab a book on computer terms (dictionary) look up the subject of interest and use the information there to determine what keywords to search for, then start googling!

That's like going to a car lot and asking the salesperson if they have any vehicles that could be shown. This whole site is about "cool programs or segments of codes," all of which can be shown to the class.

I would like to know how to make a program that is not opened through Visual Studio but is opened as its own program. So basically I want to make a program to be able to be opened through an icon on my desktop, not through a compiler.

Your request does not quite make sense. For example, "make a program" is vague at best. By using the compiler to create an application, you can then put a shortcut (i.e., icon) on the desktop for that application.

sounds like you just want to build a project rather than just compile it.... what compiler are you using?

If I understand your question you have been simply running your project
from the IDE ( pressing F5 or CTRL-F5 etc. )
When you do this, before the program runs it is first compiled,
and an executable is created ( e.g. yourapplication.exe )
The location of this executable can be found by looking at
Project->Settings on the [Link] tab.
Make sure you have the correct project and build debug or release)
selected in the left pane, and the name and location of the executable
will appear in the "Output file name" edit box ( you can change this )
If the path is a relative path it is relative to the project path
(where your source code is stored)
Using Windows Explorer you can copy (or drag-and-drop) that executable
file onto your desktop (or anywhere else) or simply make a shortcut to
it on your taskbar.
By default it will have the blue MFC icom but you can change that
by editing IDR_MAINFRAME in the 'Icon' resource

I would like to know if there is a way to store a character in a type int variable. I would still like the variable to be able to store integers, but if a certain charcter is entered I would like the program to do something else.
example:
int number;
cout<<"Enter a number: "; //This is where I would like to enter 'c'
cin>>number;
if(number=='c')
{
...
}
else
{
...
}
can you please help?

well yes u can.....
character is just i byte where as and integet is four bytes.....
by doing the above code.....that u have listed.....u will get the ascii value of the character......
search for the ascii table....it will give the corresponding values for a character variable.....
in ur case the character 'c' has an intef=ger value of 99.....

currently i have the SID of all group. I would like to iterate the list of sid and enumerate all group names. how could i do this?

my app uses a tray icon, which show some information using a tooltip if the mouse is over the tray
on my windows XP service pack 2 it works
on another windows xp service pack 1 it works
on another windows xp service pack 1 it doesn't work
and so on
it seems that my tray isn't notifyed, if the taskbar hasn't the focus
i mean something like this:
the working method:
1. click my app to the systray
2. do something other (open other windows, browser, office etc.)
3. move the mouse cursor over my tray icon -> show some information
the confusing method:
1. click my app to the systray

3. move the mouse cursor over my tray icon -> it doesn't show any information
4. click in the taskbar on any free space
5. move the mouse cursor over my tray icon -> it shows the information needed
????
can the taskbar have a focus?

i've solved the problem!
did ya know that windows differs between always on top in the tray?
well if the application is set to always on top before minimize to tray it gets every mouseover etc. event
if it's not it only gets notified if the icon has been clicked
