Well, I am at about 80cm from my displays, and yet, the grid is painfully visible. You know the 3D postcards where you had to twist your eyes to see the 3D shape emerge from the noise? My eyes tend to have trouble focusing when the grid is visible, just as when watching these postcards.

I have a couple of workstations (designed for viewing mammograms) that I use that have 2 or more 2048x2560 grayscale displays. I have to agree that the text is much sharper but without color I do not spend a lot of time developing on them. I'd rather use my main desktop that has 2 19in monitors in 1152x864 resolution.

I remember my old Atari-days: The ProScreen TT 19" was a perfect monitor, the image lying clear like a sheet of A4-paper in front of you!!!
Meanwhile I got comfortable with an Elsa 18"-TFT. But I still miss this 'paper-feeling'. However I doubt, that I could work without the benefits of color, which has overtaken an important role in information-presentation and signalling (e.g. syntax-coloring).
Questions:
1. What are your experiences? Are grayscales enough? Do you miss something?
2. I couldn't find that mono-TFT from Eizo in the net. Do you have a link or a more detailed spec. ?

I am missing syntax coloring a bit, that's true, but you get used to the different grays. I have a multi-monitor setup with an old color CRT for the situations where color is really needed.
EIZO has a full line of 1MP, 2MP, 3MP and 5MP monochrome TFT displays; you can for instance find the RadiForce G31 here: http://radiforce.com/en/products/monitor.php?monitor_id=2[^]. But there are also other providers; I had the opportunity to test the 3MP Totoku[^] display, and it was really nice, apart from not being able to change the luminosity myself (it is a calibrated display).
The only problem: the price. Since these displays are targeted at the medical market where quality and stability of the image are very important, you'll have to pay a very high price. And you'll need a special graphics card (Matrox has medical products for these displays).

You should remember that the human eye can more readily distinguish colour (during daylight) than grey. This means that almost any colour scale will enhance a difference (note that it is a difference!) than grey scale.

I'v been trying to find a good replacement for my 2 19" CRTS but so far i havent take the plunge. I have LCD 15" on auxiliary pc's but not on my monster road.

I got a new Samsung SyncMaster 213T a month ago and with it's 21.3" visible area at 1600x1200 it's a pleasure. The only thing bad is the update speed of 25ms, which is a bit high.

I've got the same monitor and every second with it is a joy! 
The response time of 25ms might seem a tad high on print but in everyday use, frankly I don't see any signs of blur or ghosting (playing HL2, Doom3, watching DVD's..)
IMO the only letdown is that LCD's can't reproduce (and also 213T) the pitch black that CRT's do.. and the backlighting shines a little in a dark room...

Very nice LCD Display includes intergrated speakers...we have several in the plant...some of the staff call them "the birds monitor"

on my main setup here @ work thats the setup, the other setup is the 15.4 & a widescreen projector screen (unsure of the size but pretty big)

Well it will be soon, for now it is two 17" TFTs and a 19" flat CRT: http://www.davidwulff.co.uk/three.jpg[^]. The two shelves on the side will be 'stacked up' so all four can be distributed evenly. I will keep the CRT because it took me months to get the colour calibrated correctly (something I have not managed on the LCD displays).
When I jumped from a single display to dual displays I spent a week thinking "this is stupid, I'll never use all this space". I thought the same when I went from dual to triple displays. Actually it took me less than a week to find them invaluable the second time round because I already have Ultramon[^]. I will have to draw the line with quad displays though because I simply won't have the space, or the peripheral vision, for any more. If the past upgrades were good guides then my productivity will increase no end (I am 90% web developer - currently VS.NET + DW on 1, IE on 2, FF + Outlook on 3).

Do you ever have any problems constantly looking at a display that is at or above your head?
I can't stand to have my monitor elevated -- I like to have it below my head or I go crazy...

I am actually the reverse of that, though I understand your way is quite common.
At a previous job the monitors where sitting on the desk level with the keyboard, and I needed the monitor titlted right forward and then slouched back in my chair to not get neck strain after a days work. It is just more natural to me to have the middle of the displays centered on the middle of my vision so I can just look forward and keep my body straight.

At the office I have a 19" CRT
At the home office I have a 21" CRT on the desktop, and a 15.4" widescreen LCD on the laptop.
Honestly now, how many people at Codeproject really only have one computer that they work on regularly?

Two monitors are really helpful for debugging a GUI app: code one one side, app on the other.
