I have an app written in Visual C++. I can build either a 32bit version or 64 bit version.
Should I always build two versions to release or just 32 bit?

I always build two versions - debug and release, and they always use 64-bit instructions.

Or just 64-bit, if you want.

Do you want to access more than 3.X Gb of memory with your app? Then 64 bit all the time. Otherwise it probably doesn't matter, unless your app relies on 32 bit libraries, like the old DirectMusic API. Then 32 bit all the time.

In addition to the previous suggestions:
if your app has to run on older machines with a 32 bits operating system, it must be 32 bits.
A 32 bits version will also run on 64 bits systems (with the mentioned limit on memory access).
Another thing that might confuse you is that a C# solution can contain 32- and 64-bits projects, which might give the impression that they can be "mixed".
These projects however cannot access each other and must be run standalone.

Other answers were all technical. But there is another very real side...
Who is using this? Are you selling it? Giving it away?
Presumably there was a 32 bit version so it is still be used? Are they using it because that is the only version or because they have 32 bit machines.
From the pure business side can you make money from both versions? Then release both versions.
From the personal side if people have been using the 32 bit one for years and download new ones then perhaps just for your own emotional state perhaps you should keep supporting them out of loyalty. You can even consider keeping an old computer set up just so you can insure that you can release a version (and test it.)
