Many years ago, I used a program with the name MAQANA.
Apparently, it was supposed to be called MAÑANA but Ñ is ascii character 209 and many terminals were set to 7-bit mode so stripped the 128 bit and displayed ascii code 81 which is Q.

i tend to avoid using special chars like tilde and umlaut for most inputs because of inconsistent interpretations
just hope context will clarify.

The only 'special' is that Americans (including ASCII, American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is incapable of handling them. This includes a lot of hardware, software and meatware. I am happy to see that the fraction is diminishing. The trends are suggesting that within 50 to 100 years, there will general accept for the normality of alphabetic characters outside the A-Za-z range.

Sorry! No Cigar. They are not un-american. I tend avoid them when typing on line because I am old and lazy. For documents, etc. I will try to use them.
I was referring to special characters in the extended Ascii set and yes, time will see growth of character sets. Hey, there is the whole family of Asian characters sets to deal with.

These characters were investigated by the Committee on Unamerican Activities, stripped of their citizenship, and deported from the USA. That is why they aren't found in US English.
Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.
