A lumberjack once told me he’s cut down 27,572 trees.
“How do ya know exactly how many?” I inquired.
“Easy. I keep a log.”

I can't help but go there...
Assuming he's just cutting down a single tree every day, but works every day of the year. 27,572 trees / 365 days in a year means it took him 75 years to do that...never taking a day off. How old is this lumberjack?
More realistically, he's cutting down way more than a single tree in day. But, unless he's merely clearing brush, the whole process for a single tree, from start to finish, can still take an entire morning, if not more, depending on the size of the tree (cutting it down is just the first step...). Of course I'm talking about one guy, with a chainsaw. Not the sort of $$$ machinery that can take down huge trees in seconds.
But okay, enough nerding out...

Don't you tell jokes about Pekka, that really tough Finnish guy, the incarnation of Finnish sisu, in your part of the world? The jokes should be told with heavy Finnish accent, to give the right atmosphere ...
Pekka was working as a lumberjack. With his strength he was able to cut down 20 trees a day. He was approached by this chainsaw salesman, seeing Pekka's old hand saw, and told him: If you buy one of my chain saws, you will be able to cut down at least 30 trees every day!
So Pekka dug up the money and bought himself a chain saw.
But he wasn't very satisfied with it. The first day, he managed to cut down only 12 trees. The next day he did 15. So Pekka went to the salesman to complain. The salesman grabbed the saw, "I'll show you how to use it in an efficient way", an pulled the starting cord. Pekka gasped:
- By golly! Does it hum as well??

I bought a total luxury item - an RTX 4080 I don't need, and could totally do without.
I did it because I'm doing so well on a project I wanted to treat myself.
I was planning on making the purchase eventually, but I feel a little guilty. Not sure why. I deserve this.
I'm giving my 2080 TI to my brother in law. I already gave my sister a 3070 TI that I got for free, so at least I'm spreading my largesse around to people I care about.
It's a bit much for Fallout 4. That's what I play though. My 2080 TI overheats now when my chassis fans aren't on full - never used to be a problem before because they were always on full, not controlled before - and especially bad if I've been playing for a bit, so that's part of what pushed me to upgrade. This card shouldn't have to go full blast to get the performance I want.
Oh well. Mixed feelings, but at least I'm looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to the actual process of pulling my old card, because the release lever is buried behind mobo heat sinks, but the final result will be fun.
I guess I can't really say I'm not a gamer anymore, now that I've invested this much.
To err is human. Fortune favors the monsters.

Yeah. My other option was a 3090. I thought about a 4090 but between the price and the wattage I didn't want to risk it.
The 4080 has less RAM than the 3090 but gets better framerates. Since I don't need more than 16GB for what I play I decided to go with that. And it uses 30 fewer watts which was ultimately what pushed me toward it.

I felt guilty when I bought my 3080, because like you I didn't need it but it's been a great board.
