Wanted to save my IE9 Favorites at work. (only "approved" browser)
Looked at the export and what does it say "NETSCAPE-Bookmark", since I was using a product called Microsoft Internet Explorer and exporting "Favorites" this seems a bit odd. Especially since I have used Netscape in the past.
You got to love a company too lazy to either make their own or re-brand what they bought.
It also says that the file I manually exported is an automatically generated file???

The action was manual, and resulted in a generated file.
It collects your bookmarks and turns it into a HTML-file?

It says the document is a netscape bookmark file, a standard of sorts used by browsers to share bookmarks based on Netscape's method of storing bookmarks.
It is not saying that it contains Netscape bookmarks.
As for the automatically generated file, well, it was.
Unless you typed it yourself, in which case why did you type in that you had automatically generated it?

Why would it be 'more appropriate' to add an extra piece of (more or less useless) info?
If you have a closer look, you'll see that as mentioned - it doesn't say that it's a list of Netscape favourites. It merely says it's using a doctype which contains the text 'NETSCAPE'
An alternative may well be a reduction in the interoperability of the browsers, for the net gain of ???
Quoting from the MSDN page [^]on the topic, "The Windows Internet Explorer Favorites file format is exactly the same as the Netscape Bookmark file format."
Try looking inside documents created by OpenOffice - I'll bet that .DOCX files produced by it have parts of the header info that are identical to those produced by MS Office. The fact that the header contains more data (than this bookmark format) allows the creator to be differentiated - but key pieces of information are still identical.
Sounds like a case of PICNIC to me!

I don't why but there is weird mentality of bashing MS amongst developer (!) community whose bread-butter majorly depends on MS products. And more often than not, it their ignorance that is highlighted at the end.

You could just copy contents of "Favourites" folder under your profile. Handy if you want only some of the links.
As a side note: when some large organization (not necessary MS) uses own format for something - people complain about closed standards. When reuse something else - people complain about NOT using own standards
