I will be the sole developer (right now), and the app is a web-based patient satisfaction dashboard for the DoD. Since there is no pre-existing code, I get to call the shots as far as architecture and design are concerned. I'm gonna go with VS2013/MVC5 and probably the Telerik Dev Craft library (includes grid, Kendo UI and data vis libraries).
They use PVCS for source control - I've never used that.

Living the dream! I've used PVCS in the past, in 1994.

Good Luck!
Try not to shoot anyone during the first three months - it may be grounds for dismissal during your probationary period.

I hope you aren't going to let your VB skills atrophy

I'm jealous. Looking forward to the string of "Why xxxxx sucks today" posts.

Let's enumerate...
- why Kendo UI sucks today
- why Telerik sucks today
- why HTML 5 sucks today
- why CSS3 sucks today
- why JavaScript sucks today
- why MVC sucks today
- why Visual Studio 2013 sucks today
- ...
- ...
Seriously though, good luck on your new gig, John

John,
Don't listen to 'em.
Only the top 2 suck. And its not just one day, its every day. Due to lack of documentation and support.
But have fun... and good luck.

Good Luck in the new role!
PVCS ... only thing to remember is that it's a lock out/check in type of source control and if they don't have a "policeman" it can be relatively easy to s***w things up... or at least it used to be so. In previous employs we never quite trusted the version we had to auto-handle multiple branches ... I was the lucky so-and-so who had to act as "policeman" to maintain the integrity of the source repository However, I quite liked it (PVCS) ... we were able to "automate" quite a few things as it had a command-line interface ... even managed to get Siebel Tools working with it!
|
|
|
|

...and don't forget not to hire any other developers to help you so you won't have any problems with multiple branches in PVCS.
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

Sounds too good, where's the catch? (Telerik doesn't count)
Good luck!

If there's something better than the telerik package, let me know.

Depends on your needs.
We're using Devexpress, mostly because of their Reporting Tools, and in contrary to Telerik they have a mostly functioning support even if I wouldn't say that their tools are much better.
But if you feel that your Google fu is up to the task you won't actually need much support. It's when you need actual real bugs fixed that it's making a difference. I feel that Devexpress really tries to help you to come up with workarounds, while Teleriks support simply establishes that it is indeed a bug that will be might be fixed in the next release.
They're also having different approaches for how to deal with "not so out of the box" solutions. Devexpress is quite event driven while Telerik is more into settings. And I'm honestly finding events quirky.
