Thanks.
A buddy and I play at open mic nights and record at my home studio. Haven't yet collaborated over the web but am definitely open to doing so!

That's very cool, Ravi. Listened to several. Got Slow Blues in A going now, sweet. It's not good though as it makes me want to leave my desk, go home and crank up the amp. Been too long since I have drenched myself in the warm river of tube distortion.

As a Pink Floyd fan, I should say that your piece Trying to be Gilmour[^] is really awesome. I like it, I like it... Thanks for sharing it.

Not quite true. Inserting a pair of these[^] into your ears will result in a larger reduction in perceived noise levels.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Nice! But how much do they cost?

obligatory commit strip[^]
On the headphone side of things.
For better noise cancellation, you need a closed back headphone; or an in-ear earphone.
I really like the Sennheiser Momentum series; I currently have the Sennheiser Momentum in-ear; which is good enough for me in an (small) open-plan office.
(edit)
If the noise in your office is really annoying, tell HR about it; so that there is a paper trail regarding work disturbances regarding noise; and maybe tell will add noise reduction doohickeys (acoustic panels on walls and ceiling...)
I'd rather be phishing!

The last question is exactly what I always ask. As far as I can see, it's ONLY management that can see the point of that...

I just noticed a nifty feature of the page. You can actually click-drag the strip sideways to get the next/previous strip.

If you ask your stewardess, she'll give you one for free. It only costs you an airline ticket.

On a more serious note.
Since Bose wasn't good enough you'll have to step up to Audio-Technica[^] or AKG[^]

I'm pretty senstitive to "noise" myself, but for me good loud metal music is already helpful. (there is a difference, between "noise" and "sound")

I use either these[^] or these[^]. Both cancel out noise very well and people around me don't hear a thing. At least no one has complained yet and at work I have listened from Pop to Black Metal with the in ear ones. At home I played Doom 3 on Razer, which are quite loud but my better half never said she heard any screaming from the inside of the headphones. When I yelled, she noticed immediately.

I use THESE[^] - not for gaming, but for music. Simply because they are really comfortable and keep almost all other noise out...

After considerable thought - almost a full seven seconds, I realized the solution for your problem can be gotten by an investment in time that will achieve a long-term solution.
Buy any sort of earphone or headphone. Plug it into your audio supply source. Crank that puppy up as loud as possible, maybe even louder.
Shortly, the background noise, along with your hearing, will begin to diminish. After a while you won't even need the headphones any more and the office will be quiet. This is an economical plan, as well, since you do not have to keep replacing the audio systems of choice as things break/wear out/technology changes make them unusable.
