So, you go to the home page of Azure, and down at the bottom is a "Visual Studio Subscriber?" with a link to "Activate Now."
Where does this take you?
To a useless page with a "Buy a Subscription" button.
But I have a subscription, and I want to activate it!!!
And this is why I run away screaming and stick with Amazon EC2.

Had similar - something to do with clicking on the email from your subscription confirm email or something (I don't recall) - I emailed the "subscription services" people and they resolved it.

Just updated to Windows 10 with the creator(?) update.. it made me go through the privacy settings again but things look (unless I'm mistaken) a little bit different.. Choose privacy settings for your device^
- Diagnostics - Off, but says "At the basic level, you'll be sending Microsoft less data to help fix errors you encounter."
- Tailored experiences with tailored data - Off, but says "The tips you get will be more generic and recommendations will be less relevant to you."
- Relevant ads - Off, but says "The number of ads you see won't change but they may be less relevant to you." (I think I might prefer to enable an irrelevant ads feature in this case )
This is why I have Mac and Linux boxes as well.. Microsoft is just pushing users like me away.
Now is it bad enough that you let somebody else kick your butts without you trying to do it to each other? Now if we're all talking about the same man, and I think we are... it appears he's got a rather growing collection of our bikes.

I would say I already had those messages and I haven't updated to creators yet.

The fanboys and the wu-maos will tell you that you have no privacy already so Mickeysoft is right and you are wrong and would you remain forever with n old OS like Windows 7? (BTW: my answer is "yes, if Microsoft continues down this path").

Whelp. Not giving away data ends in less relevant content. I don't say it is bad, but I feel like MS is getting the piss for being too honest with their users.
After all, I don't hear the same claims and blames for Android devices as often, but let's be honest - Who'd think that MS is sucking away more data than Google? I'm not saying it's less (I'd guess they're pretty much even), they just happen to be a bit more honest about it.

I think that there is a bit difference here...
For instance - while using Google for search, Google does collect information about you and may (or may not) push some adds with different relevance... But Google didn't took a penny from you!
On the Microsoft side, I have to pay $200 to get the Os, and then it start bombing me with adds, for instance about Office, and I have to configure and re-configure it to stop, and then they update the OS (mostly without asking me) and add more settings and levels to prevent me from removing those adds and let me start working...
I have no online secrets (or to be precise: my secrets are not online) so have no problem that Google measure my browsing as a payment for it's services, however, the moment I payed for a software I claim all the rights to make it mine own... And while it do not care much for the info they collect I do hate all those disturbing moments when W10 try to outsmart me...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

I had my eye on Android - I pay way more for a smartphone than I do for a Win 10 license, and I bet they're grabbing more data than the POTUS is grabbing lady crotches. Surely I can turn off location and so on - But that sorta defeats the purpose.
Kornfeld Eliyahu Peter wrote: On the Microsoft side, I have to pay $200 to get the Os
See above. I pay for the Hardware but the OS of the phone still collects whatever the heck it wants.

I'm entirely with you on this - But I sometimes feel like many here have double standards and are a tad faster to whine when it comes to MS.
Other big players do the same, or do you think an iMac isn't phoning home just because of its shinyness? I'm not saying that data collection per se is a bad thing - But only bashing MS for letting you choose what you share (that's how I udnerstand Brent's OP) is not really catching the issue at its roots.

The point is...
Switch it OFF and that means... you still send "basic" data
Switch it OFF and you still received publicity, only less adapted to you
Either they change the label and say "send more, send less", "get cool ads, get crap adds" or they leave the OFF and then shut the f*** up and let us alone...

As you have done in earlier versions. Or how did the crash reports get to MS?

Switch it to crap ads, remove tiles. Problem solved.

Sure, but google is a bunch of web services that makes no bones about the fact that they rely on advertising to provide the services.
Windows is an operating system, which is supposed to do no more than provide access to the hardware and software that users need to use to work/play/entertain themselves -- no-one "uses" an operating system directly; it's just a platform on which they can load the things that they actually use.
An operating system has no place reaping personal data from its users.
