There are special cleaning sprays but they might be too expensive for single usage (we have them at work so that I don't have to buy them).
For not corroded contacts we use KOC WebSite: Maintenance and Repair products: Kontakt WL[^]. For corroded contacts it is also used to wash out the residues after using Kontakt 60.

A model (Humberol) paint brush and a spray can of IPA or Contact cleaner. Model/toy shop for the brush, the spray can of contact cleaner can be got from the automotive section of most stores (the local Tesco for instance).

The wife's phone has that little "no right side up" charging cable and she is experiencing the same thing.
I'll try the toothpick thing this evening. I appreciate your sharing and all the other advice people have offered in this thread.

My phone was charging very slowly a while back. I killed some processes and it started charging quite fast. Must have been a background process keeping it busy and draining the battery.

I was having the same problem with my phone.
I solved it by powering it off, and then I used a thin pin to dig all of the gunk out of the slot. I was amazing at just how much had accumulated in there. It was USB-C, though, so it's a bit bigger than microUSB. Looking in a nearby micro USB port, it looks like a pin or needle would work on one side of the connector block in the middle, but I don't think it would fit between the connector block and the "top" of the port.
SIM card ejector tools like these ones might work well. Some of them are more flat than round, so they might actually be able to clean out the whole micro USB port.
When you've got it cleaned, you can get dust covers to pop in the port when you're not charging to prevent the buildup from happening again.

CRC makes a decent electrical contact cleaner, Griff. I don't know if it's available in the UK, but it's good stuff. You can also use brake cleaner, but it leaves a bit of residue, and it's kinda harsh on some plastics. You can use a pipe cleaner to get the residue off, but it's a bit difficult to fix a melted plastic connector. Try it on one you don't need...

USB (Physical) - Wikipedia[^]
Micro USB (B in this case) is 1.8mm high and half of that is the plastic supports - there is no swab you can get in there and near the pins. I got a new connector!

A telemarketer called a random person telling benefits of buying and keeping stocks for long term and why he should have them. The person responded, "Listen, I am 80 years old. When I go out to buy bananas, I buy only 2. Who knows if I will be there to consume if I buy more.".

Brave man buying 2, what if he slips on the first one?
OT - given these days with "health and safety" it's a wonder they still sell banana's with the peel. I reckon 5 years from now they're going to be pre-peeled.

And then the same department will say peeled bananas are dangerous because they are exposed to harmful things in surrounding. So, they must be packed in some hi-tech expensive bags.

An entire industry will emerge around making the bags, researching ways to make them more reusable and finally recycling them. All this will also require new laws which are only needed to insure everybody's safety.

Oh, good. Do you know where I can find the application form to sign up with THE PATRIARCHY. I have decided that I don't want to end the oppression because I still have hopes to become an oppressor myself one day.

And the peel could be dried, pulverized, and sold off as natural ant-inflammatory organic fibrous health drink powder.
