There are plenty of mediocre articles that get lots of +5 votes, probably because the author emails the link to all friends and colleagues. In fact you occasionally come across one and all the comments make it quite clear that this is happening. With a system as large as CP there will always be abuse.

But this is no reason to not try and improve the way it goes.
Reputation points are like entropy, they don't fade, and this encourages the fact that more and more people will be potential moderators, and the game goes on. If any, I am the best example of people who should normally not be allowed to moderate articles, but my rep points allow me to.
So I think:
- Rep points should fade.
- Requested rep points amount for privileges like article moderation should be set much higher.

I don't think Rep points should fade. But I do agree with your second point.

Look at the moderator's forum - when I'm not too lazy I find them in knots...

Yes, I know, but they still get approved.
And I don't think the moderator forum has high traffic or interest in. My two cents.

Indeed, and that's why I second this[^] suggestion of yours. Once we have a dedicated page for approving the articles, all relevant details (like number of votes, list of approvers and so on..) can be made available over there.
Whether I think I can, or think I can't, I am always bloody right!

I did not see that. I take it back, I am glad it helped someone.
Now seriously, several of his articles are 5-voted by profiles with just a few days/messages existence... Suspicious at the least...

Unduly harsh. I had no idea how to create a reflection in Blend, I sort of do now.
And since when did approvers have to explain their action to you?

Would it not have been so if this was correctly categorized as tip ? And the fact that you "sort of" know says all about quality.
Rob Philpott wrote: And since when did approvers have to explain their action to you?
Not to me in particular, but to everybody. For the sake of transparency.
Also because I want to be able to ask them what makes them think where the standards for "article" were met in this tip. Maybe I am all wrong and this document mets the criteria for an article, but then I want to understand why, so I can improve my moderation skills for the next.

Yes, it probably would. Does it matter? It's a bit of writing about something, tip, article - who cares?
What I see this as is a suggestion to moderate the moderators. I don't think I've ever approved anything (maybe once and I found something of a chore) so the icing on the cake would be somebody challenging it.
The bloke has written something which is short but has merit. I think it should appear.

If we go that way, why having moderation at all ? Why is the differentiation made between article and tip ?
So yes, it does matter. If not, then we don't need moderation and different article/blog/tip types. We could just be the 4chan of programming and let anyone just dump three screenshots and
Rob Philpott wrote: What I see this as is a suggestion to moderate the moderators
Exactly.
Rob Philpott wrote: don't think I've ever approved anything
Nobody asks you to if you don't want it, but if you do, then do it correctly.
Rob Philpott wrote: I think it should appear
And I don't think it should be placed on the same level as a quality article that took several weeks to write, required research and a lot of code to fine tune, even if it comes handy. This is all about quality. Allowing anybody to write anything is calling for everybody to write anything. That's my point.

And? What will you do with that list?
The functionality you suggested is good but will be of no use without any action. Solution can be
1) You flagged the item as Wrong Type
2) Popup comes asking the type. Enter the type you think it should be and proceed.
3) Thats it.
After certain number of such votes(Wrong type. It should be Tip),change its type. This is similar to what we have in place right now for approval.

Yes, good suggestion.
And I want transparency to be able to debate about article "must" contents. Otherwise, I can go farming reputation points like I suspect some do and blindly approve of everything.

So says this chap, well known nature loverhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/11071261/Sir-David-Attenborough-the-escalating-erosion-of-wildlife-threaten-us-all.html[^]
Well, I am not so sure. Mans buildings are no more than cliffs to wildlife, and happily use them as such; our house is a veritable zoo for bats, lizards, nesting birds, scorpions and all sorts of spiders, bees, wasps and creepy crawly stuff. And the cats cant get them in the loft space either.
Motorway embankments and verges have long been recognised as cross country transit routes for all sorts of wildlife since they are not farmed, continuous ribbons of wild nature. Train tracks too.
So lets say we don't grow in population, already achieved in Europe, and don't actively pollute the world, by not chucking chemicals into it, I don't see why man AND his activities cant fit into nature perfectly well.
Any objections?
