You need to make sure that you call CWnd::ShowWindow( SW_SHOW ) after creation of the non-modal dialog; either in the non-modal dialog's constructor, or directly, after creation.

I need to copy a project dialog from one project to another in Visual C++. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. What am I missing?

Load either project, and then open the other project's RC file in DevStudio. You can then drag and drop between RC files (hold down the CTRL key during the drag to force a copy operation).
You can also just open both RC files and do the same thing.

I tried that. When I go to drop the dialog icon into the destination project the icon turns into a "block" icon. I tried a few other things with importing and copying and nothing seems to work. So then I posted this post.

(Did you try both methods?) Explain exactly where you are trying to drop the dialog. Also, are you sure the target RC file (and it's Resource.h file) are not read-only?

Perhaps the problem is with using DevStudio. I'm simply using two instances of Visual C++ 6. Is that the same thing?

No. All that should happen then is the "other" DevStudio showing a message that a file has been modified and should be reloaded (if it had that file opened at the time it was changed).
BTW: You should be doing the Drag-N-Drop only across a single instance of DevStudio... Just open both files in DevStudio.

To copy a dialog D from project P1 into project P2, do the following:- Open project P2 in DevStudio and click the Resources tab when the project has loaded.
- Drag P1.rc into DevStudio. It will display as a group of resources. Select the dialog (or any other resource) you want to copy, and do Edit|Copy.
- Click the root of project P2's resource tree and do Edit|Paste.
This will copy the resource (but not the source files). You'll need to copy (and later edit) the appropriate files to P2's directory and Project|Add|Files them to the project.

I tried this as well. When I select the destination Resource tree "Paste" is greyed out.

Kevin,
Are you accessing your project thru a version control system like SourceSafe or ClearCase? If so, you'll first need to check out the P2.rc and P2's resource.h files in order to modify them. If not, make sure these files aren't read-only. Hope this helps.

Like the subject says, I'm trying to build an application which will detect a user's current network settings and, if not found, install TCP/IP. Right now I've got a working application, but it's a bunch of registry hacks and requires a reboot.
If anyone can at least point me in the right direction, I'd be most gratefull. I'd assume there's a bunch of functions that handle this functionality for me instead of having to manually edit the registry. I just have yet to find anything that covers this topic.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you manage to install TCP/IP programmatically? Well, congratulations, but chances are your code works only for your particular OS and SP. I'm afraid there's nothing like a system API that you can call to initiate the intallation of the TCP/IP stack. Best way to deal with this is IMHO to instruct the user to manually install the TCP/IP stuff himself. Remember that in order to do that the user will have to insert his own Windows CD (providing the required files yourself would be illegal).

I briefly worked on a firewall app that did programatically install networking components. However, the APIs are totally undocumented (and for good reason). I never saw the code, so I don't know what the APIs are, but they do exist.

Hey Folks,
Has anyone had any luck with displaying MessageBoxes at the highest z-order?
I have a multi-dialog application which generates error-messages, but often, the messagebox is hidden behind another dialog.
For the MessageBox HWND, I've tried various things, including GetFocus(), etc, but I get various results... Is there a function which returns an HWND that might get me the results I want?

Have you tried any of the flags MB_SYSTEMMODAL and MB_TASKMODAL? Check the documentation of ::MessageBox for more info.

It is an extended format syntax explained in the documentation for ::FormatMessage which follows the pattern
%index!format_specifier!
where index selects the parameter to replace the slot with, and format_specifier is an optional specifier following the syntax of printf and related functions.

Ok, then that explains why CString::FormatMessage(...) "allows for the parameters to be inserted in an arbitrary order."
In my particular case, this must be used by Localization in case they need to reorder parameters in the strings.
