I have been coding for over 25 years.
Started with Apple II BASIC, then in college dabbled in all sorts of languages:
COBOL
RPGII
Pascal
Fortran
GWBASIC
My career started with VAX BASIC and then went backwards with WANG MVP2200 BASIC!
From there, I transisitoned into mainframes, using mostly ADABAS/Natural and some COBOL. I was fully engulfed in mainframes for 15 years - TSO, JCL, syncsort, even subbing as an operator during special mass updates!
After 10 years in mainframes, I taught myself VB6. My next four jobs were a mixture of VB6 and mainframe.
My last job gave me some exposure to .NET, but since my VB6 was so good, I was left supporting the legacy system.
I left that job in 2010 to work for my wife and started to teach myself VB 2008. Which led to where I am now, working with VB 2010 and SQL 2012.

I started programming Algol in 1974, when my school obtained precious processing "windows" on the university mainframe. After a brief foray into Fortran, I settled into the "new" language of Basic, at college in 1978, and became the resident college "hacker", managing to annoy several other students by corrupting their workspaces during (eventually successful)attempts to get the teletype terminals to talk to each other. I believe that my little 1978 Basic application was the world's first ever IM!
Since then, I spent about 30 years in the music business, but recently came back to coding in VB.NET (completely missing out VB). I'm now working on software projects for the music and hospitality industries, but still perform as Lead Tenor in "History, The Musical" at the Tenerife Magma convention centre.

Lucian studied theoretical computer science in Cambridge and Bologna, and then moved into the computer industry. Since 2004 he's been paid to do what he loves -- designing and implementing programming languages! The articles he writes on CodeProject are entirely his own personal hobby work, and do not represent the position or guidance of the company he works for. (He's on the VB/C# language team at Microsoft).

I started programming in Basic on a DECSystem-10 as a Freshman at Caltech in 1974. I quickly transitioned to assembly language, Fortran, and Pascal. As a summer job at JPL, I did analysis of fuel consumption for the Viking Mars Orbiter attitude control system. I also spent a summer doing O/S maintenance at Digital Equipment Corporation.
After graduation, I started developing microprocessor development tools (e.g., cross-compiler, debugger) for Beckman Instruments, a scientific instrument company.
I've worked on custom file-systems, a real-time O/S for Z8000, Expert Systems (SpinPro™ & PepPro™), and internal and external networking support (I was their first webmaster).
I've worked on the DNA analysis system.
I was the console/UI software architect for Ultracentrifuges and protein Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) systems.
After 35 years, Danaher having acquired Beckman (now Beckman Coulter), transferred the CE group to become part of Sciex (2014), and was on the software team that developed the new (9/2021) Sciex BioPhase Capillary Electrophoresis instrument.

Finally, after 43 years, 7 months, and 19 days, I am retired.
