Hello,

I am a .net developer with 5+ years of experience in .NET. I worked with both Win and Web apps. I am also good in SQL Server as i have worked for support also in my first company. But now i am confused about my future. I need help of some one who can suggest me what is next. I want to take my carrier up. I can share more details of mine if anyone can help me...

Thanks in advance...

What's next? Anything. People are roughly classified into those who want to rule their own destiny, those who don't and those who just requires a good kick in the ass. The main driving force to get a place of one of the classes depends on a very vague category which could be called "human decency". Many get little freedom under the pressure of circumstances, but it is irrelevant to their positions in the main classification.

Engineering carrier really requires both logical thinking and common sense. As you don't understand that we cannot give you the suggestions because we know nothing about your background (don't pretend that you describe it), one of your main priorities could be developing logical thinking and common sense (in fact, the advice which is much easier to give than to follow it, sorry). Perhaps you need to learn to listen to yourself. I hope you have enough to say to yourself.

Happy New Year!

Thanks Sergey for your reply.. Thats true that it is not easy to give any suggestion without knowing my background. I have to think about myself and go with the same. but still you can suggest me the roles for which i can prepare my self and look forward with that. I am confused about my future role. I am good in SQL and also i love to work with that. One mind says that i should look forward in sql and but sometimes i think there are less opportunities in SQL. How about future in SQL?

Even if I could suggest some roles, 1) I don't think it can be really useful, 2) what I suggest you can suggest yourself, perhaps with better relevance. As to SQL, I think that the demand in SQL knowledge won't be reduced any time soon, but, at the same time, there are way too many other SQL developers, so it's really hard to stand out, and that probably won't change any time soon. This is nothing more than my personal opinion. Besides, if you don't learn something very new from time to time, it does not mean sustaining, it actually means going back.

Thanks SA. for some good points. It will surely help me to decide. Thanks for your precious time. If you can share some of your contact details it will help me to get in touch with you.. I am looking for some excellent mentor who can help me.
I'd say, next 5 years of programming. Choose the programming area in which you're feeling the best or which guarantee you interesting future ;)
Decision belongs to you ;)

Thank you, Sergey ;)
I don1t know how olda are you, but let's be honest. it is hard to imagine that the wealth of coders out there will be able to code at the age of let's say 60 years or more. I have encountered several programmers near their retirement... well, none of them was capable of following the changes in this industry. Some of them have coded in c# like in fortran with or cobol... So think about what your intentions are in the farer future...

Let's suppose you have the capacity to learn new things. I am pretty sure, that in those five years you haven't had the opportunity to work with all .NET related techonologies. So as a start you could enhance your skills - go deeper in something you already know, get some Microsoft certification for example. But you could also look for related fields, embedded platforms for example. Or become a Sharepoint developer. Or whatver...

On the other hand you if you have the overview and the skills, and a job opportunity, your next step could be becoming an architect. But for that you really need more thank coding skills. You need more than knowing .NET, you need to have considerable knowledge and expertise in most Microsoft technologies and products, and even in non-Microsoft ones, networking, and so on... but also in non-tecjnological topics like standards, legislation, management...
