I need to test the USB port on a large collection of set top boxes. Memory sticks are being stolen too often.

The solution I'm after is to have a PC on my production line and run a usb-to-usb cable from it to the set top box. I would then need code on the PC to emulate a memory stick.

Is this at all possible? Any suggestions where to start.

I would start with the Windows Driver Kit[^]. The last time I looked, they included a sample USB memory device driver. That would probably give you some hints.

I doubt that it's possible using a standard USB port and I can forsee all kinds of issues relating to PDs etc.

I would mount a USB socket drive blanking plate or somewhere similar and hardwire that to a cable which you can attach to the memory stick *inside* the PC.
