Sun's is the only one authorised by Sun Microsystems, and they control the Java spec. So it makes sense that a lot of people will use it.
In the same way, Microsoft control .NET and C#, but Mono exists - but most people don't use it because they can use the "official" one.
No. Java support many compiler, but javac compiler is officially compiler by sun
