The hex number is an error code, and there are a huge number of processes, methods and functions which can return or exit) with that value - system as well as user processes.
So the first thing to do is tell your friend you need more information. The whole error message for example. The code that was executing when it occurred. The circumstances under which the code used used. The usual stuff, that everybody doing a graduation project should have learned a long time ago...
Then, google the error message, or the number and look for error values that match the code that is being executed.
