You can search for jquery watermark textbox or css watermarks.

Well,if you're using this for a web page, create a hidden <div> element with your hint. Use onmouseover (or something relevant) to display your hint by changing visibility attribute. Use onmouseout to set attribute back to hidden. No ajax, no ASP: just javascript w/DOM. Work out your positioning of the message
