Can my window 8 App link to a Microsoft SQL server 2012 database

I want to create a window 8 app using visual studio 2012 . I want to have a function that people can sign in sign out function. So I should need a database. My friend he will be doing a website for the application and with the same function as mine for the sign in sign out.

He create a SQL server database and can I link my application to his database or I will need to create a database for my window 8 application? If I need to create my own database with program will I need? window Azure?
