when i select a date it shows in the datepicker in dd-mm-yyyy format

Please give more description about the problem. Are you giving any desired format previously??

just check time , date tabs in regional settings of control panel, the format depends on these pre settings

DatePicker.DisplayDate.Tostring("yyyy-MM-dd"); - or whatever you want the format to be.
