I don't find the site confusing. The comparison page will show what you get for each version.

Professionnal edition (without or with subscription) is a good choice to start with.

Try going Here[^]and find the .ISO you want to use.

If you want the Professional version though, you have to pay for it. The subscription service is where you can download older versions or others, which depends on your subscription level. You can find more info about it HERE[^]

The Professional version of Visual Studio 2010 includes a subscription service, but I'm not sure which one. Most of their MSDN downloads are through Microsoft's TechNet, but I'm not 100% sure if they won't give you another option when buying.

Hope this helps.

The following link shows the differences :

You only need to buy the Professional version with the MSDN Essentials.

The license for Visual Studio is not time limited.

The preview is time limited and will stop working sometime in 2012.... but otherwise time limitation is only for subscription services which are optional. Subscription give access to some extra stuff.
Go to here Buy Visual Studio[^] you might want to search around the internet to see if you can find a better deal before you commit to buying though. And also Visual Studio 2011 is not out yet but will be soon enough so you may want to consider waiting for it to be released. I did however hear that Visual Studio 2011 will require Windows 7 here is a quote form Wikipedia "Information about the upcoming version of Visual Studio was revealed at TechEd 2011.[112] On 16 September 2011 a complete 'Developer Preview' of Visual Studio 11 was published on Microsoft's website. Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview requires Windows 7; it no longer supports older operating systems.[113] Versions of Microsoft Foundation Class Library (MFC) and C runtime (CRT) included with this release cannot produce software compatible with Windows XP.[114]". If you would like to try out VS2011 you can find the developer preview here VS2011 Developer Preview[^]

Well, I don't think it would be wise to wait for for Visual Studio 2011 to be released... In fact, even though the preview is named Preview 11, I doubt the final version will be available this year and it might well be Visual Studio 2012.

But you can always try the preview to have a better idea. Remember that the preview is the Ultimate version that contains more functionality but that version is much more expansive.
