has anyone heard of tracer emails within a database

has anyone ever heard of tracer emails? there is a database company that is telling me that he has inserted "tracer emails" whereby when I send out my mailing list he can
tell from these "tracers" that it has been sent.
Isn't that just some random email that is in the list?
thanks for anything you got on this...

I have seen something that might be what you speaking about.
Sometime the email contain a picture in the email a logo lets say.
The image point to their server and mention who's asking for it.

For example :
