Look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Signature_Algorithm. There are also references to some algorithms for tricky operation. I wish you success in implementing that without using the appropriate packages.

+5. Great link. This sounds like a final year project for university to me so pointing the OP to the resources you did is a great idea. Let him earn his marks from research and implementation as opposed to being spoon fed. If it isn't a project, then I can't see the point to reinventing the wheel on the packages.
