As always the answer is: "It depends on your use case"

I would prefer direct storage in a CLOB over paths any time because:

Rights management: You'd have to keep the access rights on the share on which the images reside in sync with the DB access rights.

Server access: when storage on shares is distributed over several machines and the images must be accessible on the client side
then every client computer needs access to the appropriate shares.
