How to get or set microphone level using C++?

I am developing multimedia program using C++ and I can't find solutions to get or set microphone level.
My operating system is Windows 7 and I am using Visual Studio 2008.
Who can tell me how?

I mean mic level, not speaker volume level.

You have to use the mixer[^] functions.
