I think the best default is ... use void.
Automatically flagging may be perceived intrusive by some users, especially if it happens without them realizing it.
For a few of us, this comes on top of the problem of the definition of "country" : Country you are working in, country you are from, or country you just happen to be... the automatically flagging could be as wrong as any arbitrary flag.
So leave it to void by default, and let people who wants it modify it in their settings.

The country you happened to be in might be a problem for Europeans who travel a lot. Otherwise, put the country where your ass sits in on most days.

Not only using void as default.
void as default + not being able to end the registration without a valid entry.
It could end with people lying, but once you must search one... why don't search the correct one?

I think that would drop the number of "plz", "urgentz" and "fully wrong spelling" USA-Members

Because the value returned is not always accurate - it depends on the ISP who allocates the IP address. Most geolocation from IP services will return a country, but (certainly in my case) if can be hundreds of miles out - it depends on which IP addresses were available when my router connected to the ISP which one of their pool I get. I am in Wales, but I have had geolocations for Germany, France, or -worse- England...
And of course, if a proxy is used, then it could be anywhere!
BTW: I just checked, and no location is available for me today - but the consensus is I might be in Amsterdam. Oops!

Because they assume that anyone who cannot be bothered selecting a country must assume that it is obvious where they are, because they cannot conceive of any other country, so therefore are most likely American.

Often, when commenting on Q&A posts, we ask the poster to edit their question and add more information. However, there is no "Edit" button on the page, and I suspect many people do not understand what "Improve question" means. Could it be changed from "Improve" to "Edit", which may be clearer for those for whom English is not their first language?
One of these days I'm going to think of a really clever signature.

The wording was chosen deliberately. It's not meant to be clicked jsut to edit, it's meant to be used to Improve. It's an invitation to make it better. Those that don't understand the term "improve" are best not clicking the button. Those that posted a question and are looking for the button to allow them to update their question and who don't understand the term "improve" are, unfortunately, left in the lurch.
However, the value of the message to the vast majority who understand the term outweighs the minority of users THAT are inconvenienced.

Fair enough.

Good idea. Because there is enough space on the line, "Edit / Improve" may be also used.
And it should be also used with solutions. Just yesterday another user 'improved' one of my solutions by adding text without any indications what he has added so that it seemed that I have written the complete text.

That happens sometimes when the CP server load is high. The servers simply cannot cope with the demand. If you see that again, just wait a while and then check again.

To site adm: The message basil3000 has posted a new comment at "[Article]: An MFC Chart Control with Enhanced User Interface":
>>Nothing seems to be able to open the demo source code zip. Can you upload it again?
I have received a notification in my email, but the message is not posted as a message to my article. So I cannot answet it as usual authors of CodeProject articles do.

If the comment isn't there, then it suggests that the user deleted the message. It could well be that he's been able to open the file now and has decided to get rid of the post because it doesn't apply.

Hi Chris,
Code Project Article:-
"COM IDs & Registry keys in a nutshell" by Joao C Morais.
It opens in my browser, but the moment I hit the scroll bar, the screen clears, and displays 'false' in the LH-Top Corner.
I don't realy want to start a thread about this, I just want to report something that does not work. (AND I would like to be able to read the article)
I use IE8 on WinXP-SP3. I have no fancy drivers, audio rigs, games, etc. I have a booring machine that runs DevStudio 97, OpenOffice, Adobe Software for videoclips and Acrobate, and that's about it!
Kind Regards,
P.S.
Update.:
I now get this effect with each and every article, that is 'false' in the LH-Top Corner, as soon as I hit the Scroll bar.(but it does not happen with the forums). Is this a setting in my browser, or a bug in the CP site. (It does also not happen with other sites, such as Source Forge).
As it now stands, CP Articles are for now effectively 'Off Limit' for me, until this is resolved.
Please let me know what you think...
Thanks,
Bram van Kampen
