to be REALLY honest, i have been to Salzburg two times in my life.
* when i was a kid
back in those days i was really impressed by the "Feste Hohen Salzburg" (i hope i remember the name correctly).. it is the castle you can't fail when you see salzburg
* two years ago
i've just been there and went out to the bars (close to the "Getreidegasse", this is a pretty great street in the heart of Salzburg).. there are lot of shops there.. and next to it there are some bars (big fun)
A qick google on Salzburg[^]
if you ever go to Vorarlberg (that's where i live.. bigger towns are Dornbirn, Bregenz, Feldkirch) or Innsbruck or Vienna (Vienna not too well) i can give you more hints / tips where to go and what to see.
Have fun in Austria !

I would like to see a discussion board on "Managed DirectX".
Documentation of the MDX API is really bad at the moment, and I predict it will stay that way for many months. So we need a good place to discuss MDX programming. I also welcome more MDX tutorials, hopefully I can contribute when I get the time.
Right now the only decent places I know of are microsoft.public.win32.programmer.directx.managed, www.gamedev.net and www.flipcode.com, along wih a few tutorials on personal homepages. However those do not fulfill the need for a solid MDX place.
How about it, any interest out there?

Is there a who's online command for CodeProject - or would this be a security / privacy risk?

As much as I've seen this 'feature' else where, I've never fully understood it's significance. Does the fact that I have an open browser with CP pages really mean anything. What's the real menaing of online?

We often have up to 10,000 people online at any one time. That's a little too many names to scroll. Besides, there are privacy issues.

Yesterday I asked in the lounge if it's possible to print an article with all it's comments. Now I get only a link at the bottom of the page referring to the article in 'normal' layout.
It would be very helpful if CP has the option to include all comments in the printer friendly version.
Thank you in advance.

Maybe have a link under each message to make a thread 'print friendly'? Sometimes real gems pop up in the forums that it would be really useful to be able to print out and keep.

Since we have optionally to input birthdays in our profile then I think there is a seperate column in a table for birthdays. There should be a birthday thingy like the ones on the home page like the lounge and should be able to update automatically everyday.

Two best sites for VC++ programmers are CodeProject and CodeGuru. CodeProject is more dynamic site, have interesting rate system and effective search engine. When I write a programming article, I need to decide where to publish it, and usually choose CodeProject (I have an articles in both sites). CodeGuru is very fast, always online, but is has no rating system and it's search engine is terrible.
When I am participating in message boards, and need to give a link to some article which apperas in both sites, I prefer to give link to CodeGuru.
It looks like performance and accessibility are always the CodeProject problems, all time it exists. It is interesting what another CodeProject members and CodeProject team think about this.

The difference between CodeProject and CodeGuru is that CodeProject does a lot more with a lot less. We aren't owned by a muli-million dollar company nor do we have a large hardware budget. We are self funded which means we have to be very careful in how we allocate resources. We also have a far greater number of visitors.
We definitely have an issue at the moment where we are red-lining our bandwidth. We've been in negotiations for months with 3 of the leading hosting providers to fix this and we're optimistic this will be sorted out soon. We also know that we need more hardware plus some dedicated time to rearchitect some key aspects of the site. On top of this visitor numbers over the last 3 months have gone through the roof which is putting renewed strain on the site. A great problem to have, but one which needs attention.
More hardware means more licences which can mean a lot of money. More bandwidth means we will be facing a huge jump in our connection costs, plus more hardware costs for improved equipment. More dev time means, again, more money needed to pay our guy's rents.
This will all be done. Once we choose a new hosting solution we're locked in for up to 3 years, so if we rush this and make the wrong decision we're screwed. Our timeframe is November. We have also put together a budget for more hardware, but the form that takes depends on the hosting solution we choose. Again, November. As to dev time we have Nish and Smitha onboard to help take some load from me while working with me to redo the underlying infrastructure. This is ongoing.
So yes, we have some performance bottlenecks at the moment and it's causing us a lot of sleepless nights. We are aware of this and are working to fix it as soon as budgets, negotiations and sleep requirements allow us.
cheers,
Chris Maunder

Thanks for the answer, Chris. I like CodeProject and this is a reason I opened this thread. When I see that site has a technical problems for a long time, I ask myself, what can happen in the future. Do you remember worldofatl.com? It was a great site, and now it is gone. It is good to see that you are working to solve the problems.

Slightly off topic but how can we support CP? Visual Studio is still a bit expensive for me to get at the moment. Are there any other ways we could contribute?
