There are a number of ways to build authentication in your application.

First question would be whether you want to do authentication in the application or in the database.
Based on that decision, you will come across number of options.

Then you will need to decide on what type of authentication within your first approach.
For e.g. if you choose Sql Server, you need to choose between Windows and SQL in SQL Server.

So your question is too generic. Read some articles on the internet and you might be able to find the best approach that suits your needs.
