I am unable to install SQL Server 2008 properly on my win 8.1 laptop.

Installation type menu is missing while installing, even after that SQL Server 2008 will get installed, but then unable to connect to database engine.
(unable to connect to any instance)

Even unable to find any local server when browse for it through SQL Server.

SQL Server services are also missing.

Same SQL Server 2008 works fine when I installed it on my desktop (Windows 7)

Same problem comes from sql server 2012 present inside visual studio 2012(unable to find any local server)

MSSqlexpress folder also missing.

Plz help me asap, struggling from 2 weeks to connect
