Manipulating files on server using Ajax

Hi,

I have a device that uses linux based OS with lighttpd as a web server. I want to know whether we can use Ajax to read and write file on server / device. Also want to know whether we can upload and download huge file using Ajax or do we require something that developed in native.

There is no support for any server side scripting language such as php,perl..etc...
