Where can i learn AJAX for developing smooth running web applications in ASP.NET?

I am a asp.net developer (beginner). I am trying to create a social networking site(i know it requires lots and lots of experience). I believe a social networking site have got to be smooth and fast with minimal load on server. And i believe i would need to learn AJAX(if i am not wrong) to develop such a site. My question is how and where can i learn AJAX to develop such a site , I am not talking about AJAX TOOL KIT btw. Thanks.

You need to start with a smaller project if you are a beginner. You even said it yourself, it requires lots of experience which you do not have right now. So why attempt something you are not ready to do?

Also, if you are having to ask where to learn something when there are millions of results when you use a search engine online, then you definitely do not have the researching skills needed to build a networking site.

I tell you this not to offend, but to get you back into reality.

You are right google search would return millions of results and that is exactly why i am asking it here since i am confused where to start. People here are more experienced than i am and so i though it would be a good idea to ask someone who has already been where i am and therefore can guide me. I am not trying to create hi-tech site facebook btw.

I just checked the links suggested by you and thy do seem helpful. There is however one tiny little thing i wanted to ask... It seems that the articles are using XML as datasource and i have no clue about XML. I am using MS SQL Server. Should i still go through that article?

Then it will be more useful for you as you will try to learn XML as well..!!!!..For now,have some look at xml and try to go through those links.Concentrate on what the AJAX is,how it works,when we should use it,what is AJAX toolkit.etc.All these are very basics for begginners. The second link will be more accurate for you.

I can use ajax tool kit , dont have any problem with ajax tool kit as such, but i wanted to learn more apart from tool kit and now that you have given me the links i know where to start. Btw , regarding XML .. would w3school be right place to start learning XML from?
