Chat Application development in C# asp.net

Hi All I am developing a chat application in asp.net. Problem is that, when
other user sends a message, I want my text box 1 (which shows the messages) to
refresh automatically.If i am using Timer it is causing a problem to my other
text box 2(where i am entering the text)
How shall i overcome the problem?
Can i use Timer to focus on only text box 1(which shows the messages)
Can any one help
