This is actually using NTFS file systems Alternate Data Streams (ADS) and everything after the : is actually the name of the Alternate Data Stream. It's not exactly totally hidden or secret and from Vista on, you can provide the dir command with the [/b]/R[/b] argument to make it include alternate datastreams within its results.

If you copy a file with an ADS attached to it onto a non NTFS drive (FAT, FAT32, etc) the file will copy fine, but the Alternate Stream will not transfer with it.

If Triple clicking seems cumbersome you can double click and then take a little time on the third click. It gives you a decent amount of time, but not forever. After playing with it though you can get a feel for how long you have.
