You are not completely right. Methods 1 & 2 depend on both DNS server(s) and Google.com be up, method 3 only depends on the Google's server with given IP be up. However, method 4 will work even google.com is down for a while because it will basically do a DNS lookup, in other words will connect DNS servers not google.com.

By the way, how often does Google.com go down?
