ToJSONString() is also a java function. Just removed it and save the obj only.

Assuming you are going to use this data at client side (javascript), you can put this data into a hidden field and then access it on client side.

Why are you using subquery when you can get the result through single query. But if you have to use sub query you can do like this..
SELECT Top 3 * FROM (SELECT item as ITEM, COUNT(quantity) as TOTAL_ORDER FROM Items_Order Group By ITEM )as od ORDER BY TOTAL_ORDER desc

Could you please tell me what do you want to do with each row. If you need to do some processing on one column, you can create a functions. Then you can call the function in your select query. Something like this
SELECT Col1, DoSomeProcessing(Col2) as Col2 FROM table1.
