what i don't think a lot of commenters understood was that this exercise was never about the problem.see i like to make my students think on there feet.even when it seems that its an impossible problem or all the information isn't there i still encourage them to try and think of ways of accomplishing these tasks without additional guidance.and i was pretty much testing the waters here by giving this problem to experts in the field .no ill will was meant towards anyone.

and i totally agree with that but come on you guys are professionals wheres you ingenuity & creativity, i thought id throw you a few curve balls to see how you would digest the problem.

i accept that things were getting heated and i might of glazed over a few things but still you managed to give a correct answer with the information provided

!!!!!!!!CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! someone finally got the correct value.ill accept that i need to add additional details into my problem to give it clarity , and yes maybe it was hard to fully understand in this form but my god i thought someone would have put the pieces together hours ago.

what don't you understand about every FIFTH day , think about that for a second and let it sink in.okay, are you done , alright.now unfortunately you are still incorrect but i really do hope you gain an understanding of this problem in the next i don't know 20 years because my god it has been a slow day at the office with you drones.

i take it from your collective silence that you have have all accepted defeat
dear, dear dear.so called real software professionals what a joke

whats you definition of failure? from what i can see there is one incredibly simple problem and several incompetent programmers who after about three hours have yet to answer it .

yes its included in it because this exercise is ideally designed for entry level cs students ages 18-21 who don't possess a strong grasp on the language or basic mathematics.the aliens are irrelevant they could of been any lifeforms.i just added the aliens to give the problem context.if you still cant understand then maybe you should try removing the aliens from it and simply viewing them as random lifeforms.

right everyone who is monitoring this question i am going to give you a value, said value will be a generalized figure of where the final 30 day count should stop. are you ready. are your sure ? ok then : 160,000.
do with that what you will ;)

i wouldn't weep , although there algorithms were incorrect the answers they produced were closer to solution then any others listed here so congratulations a first year cs student is slightly smarter then you .

Nope my patience broke, i am seriously doubting the legitimacy of some of the users if they cannot solve such a basic problem.all the information they require is there.

IGNORE THE BIOLOGY OF THESE CREATURES ITS A NON ISSUE JUST SOLVE THE PROBLEM USING THE INFORMATION PROVIDED

ah but you do not need the additional details
PEOPLE ITS A SIMPLE PROBLEM YOU DO NOT NEED ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
9 DIFFERENT CS LECTURERS ALL CAME UP WITH THE CORRECT ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM IN MINUTES JUST THINK PS. THIS WAS APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENTAL HEADS OF THE CS DEPARTMENT SO I THINK IT IS IN A PERFECTLY VALID STATE.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

see now i feel i have been incredibly hard on my students, when i wrote this problem it was incredibly simple to solve but over the past few hours i can see that even supposed experts in the field cannot provide a correct answer and are focusing too much on the literal.

well i can tell you wendell that although its the wrong answer your still the closest to the answer out of the ones given

ppolymorphe im not wrong and if you read my previous comments you would know that you shouldn't be trying to apply real world logic to these aliens think of it this way and don't argue with the logic : once an alien is hatched they are then able to reproduce the same day.

since people are having trouble with this (and i have no idea why its a basic problem)try thinking of a solution from a programming perspective instead of a mathematical one.

no your still incorrect
day 1 1 alien 3 eggs
day 2 1 alien 6 eggs
day 3 1 alien 9 eggs
day 4 1 alien 12 eggs
day 5 4 aliens 21 eggs
day 6 7 aliens 39 eggs
use this logic to solve the problem on each day.

unfortunately that's not the answer but your not the only one to try and use the Fibonacci sequence. you haven't taken all constants into account and because of the expected structure of the problem the Fibonacci sequence (0,1,1,2,3,5 etc) would not work

as stated before perhaps i should of provided additional information and applied real world logic to it but in my defense its the first week and i was trying to give them a simple programming problem(which is really mathematical) just to test there implementation skills in c++ using basic maths. if anything this is just an a example of a modified geometric series problem.bottom line don't focus to much on the literal just approach this as it is stated without additional information.

i recently qualified as a (part time)lecturer so i apologize for my some what vague assignments.its not intentional i just haven't got out the mind set of thinking i don't have to explain every aspect of a problem to my students.there ability ranges are mixed but i expected at least few of them to understand this basic problem with the information provided but as PIEBALDconsult implied i could of included additional information and variables.

the only constants here are :
1 live alien can only lay three eggs per day
each egg takes 5 days to hatch
using these how many aliens will be active at the end of each 24 hour period up until the 30th day

my fault i omitted pieces of information
assume they can breed immediately upon being hatched
they are a genderless species
no mating rituals required
assume they are an asexual species
