thank you for this link, it has solved my issue :)

Ok i have checked and the connection string is in both app.configs. i dont see a appname.config but i do see a appname.dll.config in my install location which contains the connections strings.

in my solution i have 4 projects, the entity framework model is in one project and the outlook addin is part of another project. i have a reference to the project that contains the entity framework model in the addin project.I have an app.config file in both the addin project and the project that has the entity framework model.... the other 2 projects are for authentication and the wix installer.
