when I debug the problem comes at Dim amountorhour As String = record("amountorhours").ToString
"Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

amountorhours exists and is a variable in Jquery which hold a textbox and another jquery function.

May be I'm not clear. Actually R|2 is not only value. Thats the example of one value the hidden field is holding. R is pay_category code and 2 is the value of text box that I enter everytime. Taking the pay_category filed into consideration the text box value should be either stored in Amounts or Hours column.
So can this be the solution?
Dim input As String = hiddenfield.value
Dim split As String() = input.Split(New [Char]() {"|"})
If split(0) = "A" Then
amount = split(1)
ElseIf split(0) = "R" Then
hours = split(1)
End If
