i am not able to see the user id. When i debugged it Page.User.Identity.Name was returning null string.
What is actually the problem. What should i do to get rid of it.

In my site I want to keep track of online users.I want to have a page that lists the current online users. I know that I have to add the user who logs in to a variable stored in application object. But I need to remove the user who exits the site(logs out). But the users don't need to explicitly log out in order to make their authentication ticket removed as they can close the browser window other than clicking the logout link. My problem is how to remove the user from the "logged in users list" stored in aplication variable when they exit by just closing the browser window.

Not sure about what your specific requirements are, but I have kept track of online users in my web apps by keeping a table in the database of who is online, where they have gone within the web app, etc.

My web app actually looked for idle time and removed users who were inactive past the set idle time.

My web app was actually written in php on a linux box, but the idea can work with asp.net/sql server. What I did was every so often, once a minute or two, run a trigger that checked if the user had been idle for more than 10 minutes, if so, kick them off with a kind "You must log back in" type of message. It is up to you how often you want to check so you don't give the database server too much of a load to deal with.

Tell about the trigger please . What kind of thing is it ? I am sure it is not the trigger concept in SQL. Can you elaborate ?

Not just using triggers, but have sql server run a scheduled task every so often ( you set the time between runs of the task ) take care of it for you. Maybe have it in a stored procedure.

I already know about triggers well. What I don't know is the "scheduled task" you talked about. How can I define such thing in SQL ? I have not heard anything about it till now.

As long as you are not using SQL Server 2005 Express or MSDE, SQL Server should have the ability for you to schedule jobs that can run queries or stored procedures. If you are using SQL Server 2005 Express or MSDE, you are stuck with writing a utility app that executes the query/stored proc on your database at the time/date you specify with the Schedule Tasks in Windows Control Panel (kind of cheap, but it works).

As a matter of fact I am using SQL Server 2000. But I have not seen anything about scheduled jobs in "Books online". You will do me favor if you at least give me the expression for creating such scheduled jobs. Just mention the keyword and I will find details in Books Online.

I'm creating an image editing tool website and I want to know how I can display a bitmap class on a webpage like you can do in windows forms. There is an image control supplied but that only lets me specify a url.
I could just save it to a file and set the image url to that but then if they refresh the page they will see someone else's work.

If you would want to do that, you would have to create a component that you could run in the browser, that would display the image. It would not be very efficient, though, as the data in a bitmap object is not compressed.
The browser itself is only capable of displaying images in the form of an image file. They don't have to be saved on the server as an actual file, though, you can create a page that creates the image file data and sends it as a response to the browser.

Acutually I want to prevent cross-site scripting in asp.net forums.
If I want to protect from user input data when user (lamer) enter script in the textbox in asp.net forms. If I get to textbox string and convert the <, >, & symbol to HTMLEncoding in the string. Is this process enough for prevent cross-site scripting?

Yes.
But you ought to process HTML on the way out as it's getting displayed on screen rather than store it in the database in HTML encoded format. This ensures the database stores the data in a platform neutral format, also because some ASP.NET controls perform their own HTML encoding (such as the ToolTip property, or Text property for TextBox controls), and you'll end up encoding the encoding and the user will see < on the screen instead of <
Use Server.HtmlEncode(outputString), but don't do this for control properties that already do their own encoding for above reason.
