That's not Windows fault - except indirectly: it's the most popular desktop OS so most software is written for it. Blame the idiots that write the useless little apps, yes - but if Linux was at all popular then you would find the same rubbish available for it as well (it's already there for Android, after all...)

I'm not sure how he did it, but my son-in-law got intpo my Windows machine in about 5 minutes with no DVD or USB. He's the head of global cyber security, so I guess he's supposed to know such things all the people who work for him are well trained hackers.
