So, tis the season to be jolly bloody miserable!
Youngest had a very good report this term including going from no experience to A in French in one term! My dear darling love MRs Wife said she can have whatever she wants [usual terms apply] for Christmas and my, otherwise apparently intelligent child, wants a bally iPad! 
I have never owned an Apple device and not really wanted one since the days of the Apple ][. So, dear hive mind, it looks like I have to buy a Crimbo iPad. Which model is bestest for an 11yo? I only want wi-fi so mobile use doesn't come in to it.

The cheapest one. Less painful (physically and financially) when it is dropped.
Doesn't matter if it's small because small fingers and good eyesight.
(and technically you still won't own an apple device  )

Please, we have been down this route but it has to be an iPad. This is in no way influenced by Besty having an iPad, iPhone, Mac Book Air and iDon't know.

The Missus just got herself a new work phone, an iPhone. She sat all night yesterday trying to port data from her old Android and every time she had a question and asked me about it, I took great pleasure in saying:

That works in theory but I've found it is much different in practice.
But I do have an out, my adult daughter loves her Apple stuff so I point the wife that way.

Same here. Wife's iPhone updated itself to whatever the latest OS is and "things are different". She was asking me the other day what she needs to do and my answer is always "get an Android". That usually buys me a day or two until she asks again, which prompts the same response.

I'm still fine with my Nexus 7 - but Herself's Samsung Galaxy tab S 10.5 has a superb display.
But... It doesn't fit in my pocket, which mine does.

I have an iPad mini 2 I think. there are versions with mobile and without mobile data.
You "could" buy one with if there is no price difference and just don't buy the sim.
I have a keyboard case around it, which protects it very well.
I'm pretty happy with, but I have to admit I use it for a lot different things.

As I said, I use it for a lot of things, which makes it worth its price.

Buy the crappy €80 plastic Android tablet with the 3 year old OS. Tell us how wonderful it is and how happy your child is - but save us the sanctimonious BS.

I don't really understand your despair. I am NOT an Apple fan but when it comes to a choice between iOS or Android (and the associated hardware) I choose iOS devices. I often get infuriated about the things you can't do or the things it forces you to do Apple's way but in the end it just works. It does what it does very well and it's very reliable. Your youngest will know how to use it and won't need any IT support because she will simply take for granted its way of working and the things it won't do. She won't expect to be able to dive into a file explorer and delete important stuff or accidentally move it to the wrong place. She won't complain about not being able to do lots of things you wouldn't want her to do anyway.
If you can afford the price just get one. Life will be much easier than if you bought one of the many crappy alternatives.

Just tell the salesperson that, on expert advice, you need the model that floats when put in salt water. Make sure you have him/her/it demo a few models.
