I've been working remotely for over 20 years, and last week I accepted a position[^] that requires being on-site (with management discretion on a case by case basis for telecommuting Roll eyes | )

So why did I do this? Because:
  1. it looks like a great company
  2. the people I met were smart, articulate, and had themselves been there for many many years, indicating that they really liked working there.
  3. I'll be working with peers, something I rarely experience as a solo remote worker, and I am really looking forward to that. (That doesn't mean I don't love working with hardware engineers, satellite designers, boat yard managers, or people in the "entertainment" industry, but with regards to the tech itself, it's been 25 years since I've worked together with people whose career is software development.)
  4. I'll be working with Microsoft tech (C#, SQL Server, etc.) which is my passion. Python is fine, I actually enjoy using Python on single board computers, but I really cringe at the idea of using Python for back-end work. Granted, when I installed Django and played around around with it, I actually found Python/Django a very pleasant experience. But it's still a script language, and runtime debugging of syntax errors still sucks.
  5. Hopefully the management (and my peers) will be considerably saner than where I have been working.
So, it'll be a 30 to 40 minute (fortunately pleasant, from what I've seen, hardly any traffic, the benefits of living in a rural town and commuting only to the outskirts of the Albany area) commute, listening to liberal biased NPR on the drive (oops, I said this wasn't going to be a political post) or maybe just driving in the silence of my own biased thoughts, haha.

Learning to code with python is like learning to swim with those little arm floaties. It gives you undeserved confidence and will eventually drown you. - DangerBunny
