I have, but the graphics format of that game was known so that part was relatively straightforward. Maybe this game also uses a known format? If not, well, you could try to extract them with a DirectX hook or something like that.

What do you exactly mean with "known format" ?

OK, this implies you did not create (or recreate) the graphics by yourself.

It does indeed. I'm not an artist, so that's not happening. It would take too much time anyway.

And the graphics were available ? Usually these are quite complicated things to get at... I mean, you can screenshot the original and extract and all, but you sometimes need alpha channels or transparency values which are for sure not contained in the screenshot... Sounds like a lot of time also...

They were in some funny format, but it was a funny format that was documented, so it was pretty convenient. I just wrote a loader for that and loaded the old files.
If that's not the case, you can still try one of those DirectX hooks that dump textures and models etc, then you get alpha channels and so on as well and it's not too labour intensive.

Swiping the graphics from an existing game is almost certainly against the EULA and copyright law. I doubt anyone would care for such an old game but it still seems silly, particularly when (iirc) the graphics on the original A&A aren't even that good.

If it is for the sakes of reproducing something for you at home, I think it is about as critical as copying a painting from a famous painter as a paint exercise.

Well, don't release it, obviously
And definitely don't sell it.
But you can't do that with a remake anyway, even if you make it from scratch, unless you ask the owner for permission and get it.

Two steps:
1. First create the logic with only basic graphics (or even console mode)
2. Integrate the UI
If you can go through 1, and still want to finish the game at that point (including the 10,000 problems you have not figured out yet, for instance an AI to play against), then part 2 will be a real pleasure.
For the gaphics part, it depends if it involves solely 2D or 3D (can't see the screenshots, site is blocked here). Everybody can create more or less good sprites, 3D is not that simple. In any ways, DirectX or GL are the ways to go. You'll need to define sprites for moving objects, create a time base to make them move, etc... Creating the graphics itselves are the most time consuming part, I think. Animating is a piece of cake, nowadays.

Re-started reading the series[^] yesterday night. I read the two first books a few years ago, and got frustrated that the ending were still not written at that time Now that teh cycle is done, I give it another try.

Did you know that if you swapped the E for a D you get the description of how time feels as you watch the film.

Just had to google it, I did not realize they made a movie out of it. Well, IRC, the movie vs. book debate has already been made here earlier this week...

Rather simplistic book but a good achievement considering the age of the author.

Yes, exactly my opinion after reading the books last time.

I really liked the first book, but further down the road it sort of got stuck, like there wasnt really anything interesting going on...

I believe the third book wasn´t really thát good, but I did like the final book. It is pretty well conceived .

For past 20 hours I was away from internet and phone. Felt like something is missing in my life. It took a while to realize that I do not really have a life if I remove internet. Scary. I now plan to spend at least a weekend a month without gadgets.
I did realized how much I can think and create after these distractions are removed. Either I was traumatized due to lack of internet or I can write some good stories.

Good for you, I've often suggested this to the missus, to no avail. Occasionally I'll go fishing/hiking for a day without a gadget and often feel that a weight has been lifted, it's quite nice.

It's good to spend some time 'off grid'. Being online really reduces productivity in most aspects of life, although that's not true at work because having access to CP, SO and Google outweighs the time wasted posting on the Lounge and similar places.
