If you are really interested, try the source-code of "hotplug" and/or "udev", both used to handle hotplugging devices under Linux.

What do you mean by not working? Is it could not start? No page display after you enter the URL? Display any error message when you launch internet explorer?

check with the version of IE , if its 7 ... u need to do all the browser settings... ver 7 required some more settings....if its lower version...

Go to http://www.merijn.org[^] download and scan with hijack this. It will output a log. Post the log here or email it to me.

Try going to Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes and change the "Turn Off Monitor" property.

Barring all else, try plugging a different monitor into the machine. Your symptoms sound alot like how my Mitsubishi DiamondPro died a few weeks ago.

Hi All,
One of my friend's machine has been formatted and re-installed windows Xp. but it's not detecting the NIC. There's another machine which has the same configuration. I checked it's configuration. the device manager shows that it is VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter, I downloaded the required driver from Via-Technology's website. While I'm installing the driver using the setup, it's showing that Can't find NIC. What to do? Could you please provide some help to resolve the issue?
I tried AIDA for detecting the hardware but it also could not find the adapter. AFAIK the Ethernet card is an integrated one. What to do?

Check the CMOS Setup for the adapter. It may have been disabled. Also, if it's not integrated, you may just need to reseat the card.

The card is integrated and I checked the CMOS. All the integrated peripherals are enabled.

Hmmm... [think, think, think...]
Try plugging it into a hub or router and see if the green activity light comes on. If not, the port may be toast. The hardware, if working, usually responds to a physical connection whether the driver is loaded or not.
There might also be a loose jumper on the motherboard that enables the port. It's a long shot, I know, but it sometimes happens. If you have the manual check it out.
If any network card appears in the Device Manager, delete it and reboot - Windows should detect it and reinstall it for you. Failing that, try booting into Safe Mode with Networking and see if that finds the port.
Or you could whack it with a stick; it won't help, but it always makes me feel better when I'm totally stumped.

Wright,
Thanks alot for the reply. I've resolved the issue.
All the configuration BIOS was correct.
It was a simple technique, that I opened cover and i could see that NIC is and integrated one. So rebooted the machine and in the POST screen I checked the mother number identification number. it was Intel GAG (Sorry I can't recall that series number) Chipset and downloaded the required drivers from the intel website itself.
Thanks a lot for helping me out.

Glad to hear it's fixed!
Good job of diagnosis - it's often far from easy to analyze and correct a fault like this.

Try to check your windows edition. Go to Run and type winver.exe. If your computer running windows xp home edition, then you could not use gpedit.msc.

Not too many people here use Linux, so you probably won't get an answer here. But if you want a good site for Linux help, I would suggest Linux Forums.

Wonder if any1 could help me out with a litle problem, i need to modify the file that control the the sound effects on windows xp systems or.., my problem is: I have customized the "start windows" .wav file, the .wav files starts, no problem with that, but windows ends it after 30 sec.
I think, if i havent got this total wrong, windows got a time limit on how long the "start windows" .wav is gonna play before it times out and windows stops it.
When i set the same .wav as "windows Logon" melody, it plays it all to the end.
So my question is, is there a way to modify that file to extend/remove the timeout of the startup .wav ?
Any help would be apreatchiated

There is no timeout in the WAV file. There is also no configuration in an .INI or Registry setting to change this, as far as I could determine. It looks like it's hard-coded to play for a maximum of 30 seconds.
