Jigsaw is also a tool that cuts wood, thus "hardware". OP's attempt at being funny?
Before "jigsaw" puzzles were made of cardboard, they were made of wood. The wood cutting tool, known as a Jigsaw has a thin blade allowing intricate cuts to be made.
According to Google, they were first known as dissected puzzles and were then called "jigsaw" puzzles after the tool's name sometime in the later 1800's.
