I think that there are a lot of people that want a free ride, but that does not mean that things should be free, especially development tools. In a capitalistic society, if someone wants to give away their goods for free, that is their choice. The key there is that it is the creators choice of whether the tool should be free or not.
So if they want to help out students, all developers, or even make money from their tool, the toolmaker should make that decision.
I think that many people, including computer professionals, have a misconception of the amount of effort required to create software, especially good software that runs efficiently and bug free. I dont understand why anyone would think that development tools should be given away for free. I think that it would make it easier for developers that are less fortunate and unable to aquire some of the tools that they desire, but this is still a want rather than a need. I would like a free copy of 3D Studio Max and other high-end rendering programs, but I still dont think that they should be given away for free.

Yeah, you should have stopped on the "the toolmaker should make that decision" line
