Knowing how VB is despised/shamed here, I wonder just how many still use it but just don't like to talk about it.

I second that! Even if luckily I can't say I'm using it anymore - for now. We all know it's still in production, we all know that someday it will need to be maintained or ported and there is no need to say who will do it, being one of the last people in my company that knows VB6 and has sizeable experience with it.

Quote: being one of the last people in my company that knows VB6 and has sizeable experience with it. I had a similar experience with VB3 .. corporates do take a long time to port to a more modern language don't they.
Anyhow, being one of very few people still working (i.e. not retired ) who had sizeable experience in VB3, I got the contract. And very lucrative it was too

One of our latest clients complained that our apps have an 'Windows XP look' while they really have an ugly mix between local system's and Windows 98 look. We're working on porting our monolithic apps though, now that 20 years later, the software development technology has finally caught up with the marvels of the legendary VB6 ...

Does anyone have a doubt how it will end up? I guess similar to R. Dispite the fact that this language built MS into a global powerhouse.

I used (6.0) for a big project, so I save the right to despise it as much as I want to

Unforgivable, unless someone threatened your life or your family if you did not use it.
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.
His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

It wasn't my choice... And - at least - I got money for it...
(the story in short: the company looked for the next development platform and went for MS. MS invited us to it's DNA Lab and interview us about the project. At the end they told the Visual Basic 6.0 - then new - is the best tool and made a demo. The PM/Owner liked the idea, so went home to blood, sweat, and tears....)

...but got away with not having to.
I was asked to assist a non-programmer doing some research and using 'R' to debug his program. I managed to persuade everyone that he would be better off doing it himself. It had so much overhead in setting up, getting permissions, etc. that any time I saved him would be wasted.
Luckily, they believed the b*llsh*t, took the bait and let me off the project. Phew! That was a close call.
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

the runtime sucks. It's slow, it crashes, it's awfully documented and its own examples won't run or will run with different results (especially the graph routines).
If I have to choose I prefer paying for a Matlab license - it's the industry standard in many fields, it's faster, it's maintained, it has a large community of users and a large repository of add-ons.
Professionally, "you get what you pay for" marks the difference between a proper tool and R.
ADD: it sucks to the point that in two hours I could reach the desired result with Excel where it failed for two days straight on R... and I'm *not* a proficient Excel user.
