The Gaming market is more promising then anything else.
The prospects for Smart Phone applications are much high. Given, every other phone user wants to move to Touch-Screen.
The Phone and Console is future!

Not too sure about that. Games in general seem to be going the same way as movies - someone sees a bandwagon, everybody jumps on and makes the same stuff. Trouble is, games cost as much to make as movies - serious dosh - so there is a lot of reluctance to fund "unproven" concepts. Not too sure we have anything really unique in the games market for a while now. Better graphics, yes. Some better AI, yes. Better storyline? More Immersion? New genre? Don't think so.
I think it will take a major shake up to produce anything new and exciting.
Real men don't use instructions. They are only the manufacturers opinion on how to put the thing together.

My mom's best friend's boyfriend is really smart. And right before he and my mom's friend left after staying our place to hang for a bout a week I asked him referring to one day how to be an author, "I want to be a writer but people have been writing stories for eons. How do I tell a story no one has ever heard before." and he said, "You can't, every story has already been told, all you can do is tell it better."
I think this concept applies in this area of expertise as well. We can make a game that is great in its AI, graphics, and all its buildup in general, and then we can make it better; but as far as the storyline goes, I don't think anything unique is going to showup anytime soon.

I suspect the largest will be usual line-of-business apps with relational DB's etc.
May not be the most the exciting or forward-looking, groundbreaking etc. Almost certainly biggest.

AI. Understanding human's speech. Intelligent search. Believable NPC's in computer games. Ontology data analisys. Better software for house bots. Friend selectors. Music genius generators. Estimating the meaning of life.

Where is militaryware? Anyway, the things about AI etc that you mentioned would be part of that. I feel defense and intelligence gathering will have an increasingly major undisclosed portion of sw development every year.

This area was real big when I was in school in the mid 1990s but since then I have not seen the expected advancements.

It's because you live in an AI stupid-clever continuum. If you compared 1990 with a current state you would see a big difference. Friend selectors (Facebook), Intelligent search (although still keyword-based) (Google and others), NPC in games (everywhere), human speech (today's OSes), more accurate OCR, selfteaching translators (Google translate), converting satellite pictures to maps, medical equipment, market analisys. Well probably some of them would not be called AI in school, but still.

I think that next year will see greater uptake/use of non-relational database technologies.
They are seemingly easier for beginning programmers to use. Of course they aren't in reality and are as full of traps and pitfalls as relational ones.
So I reckon that starting from the second or third quarter of 2011 there will be a trickle, followed next year by a flood of Gimme Codez qs about them in Q/A.

You got the point - but didn't pick up on the cynical side (often my only side).
If that still doesn't work - think of it as a Zen thing.
