Depends on the environment. I work at a contract shop; with a few hundred people in the building it's more or less a given that someone is going to have a potential/client in the building at the time. Not looking trashy in front of the people in places that formal atire is still required is the justification for the business casual dress code for office workers. A polo = nice jeans is acceptable for people who're doing a decent amount of work in the highbay (machineshop, hardware testing, and other industrialish stuff).
